Living in the Ghat: Damini's Daily Life

Damini Devi was abandoned by her husband early in 2022. She has 3 young children that depend on her for survival. The two youngest, Saurab and Aribabh Choudary are pictured with Damini.

Given their living conditions and dire financial situation, the oldest child, Gaurab, was sent to live with Damini’s mother in a village which is 10 hours away by train. Visits are rare and almost impossible to orchestrate.

Damini's Living Conditions

Damini, Saurab, and Aribabh live in a one-room flat in a building adjacent to Shaktidhaam, in the poverty-stricken Harishchandra Ghat. They have no electricity. There are no appliances of any kind, even basic ones that every household needs for cooking and preparing food. Like many families in this building and in the Ghat, they use a gas ring for cooking and they have one sink that they use for everything.

Damini has no way to support her family, and no prospects for providing for them in the future. Her life and her sons’ lives depend on government and charitable assistance.

The young boys are regular visitors to the ashram. The family comes for every bhandara to enjoy and benefit from a hot meal, usually the only hot nutritious meal they will have that day (or for several days). They come for all the sacred holiday celebrations and many other occasions offered by the ashram as well.

There are many, many families in situations similar to Damini’s in Harishchandra Ghat.

We Can Make a Difference

Now, with your help, we can make a difference for everyone living in this Ghat. We can change their lives, one child, one meal at a time.

Tuesday, November 29 is Giving Tuesday.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Light Legacy and Shaktidhaam Foundation have received a match commitment from several individuals and business owners in our Sai Maa Community. In other words, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar.

On Giving Tuesday (or anytime between now and then), please help support families living in Harishchandra Ghat who struggle to feed their children at all, much less healthy, nourishing meals. Because of generous people like you, we can make a difference in their lives.

“Feed one person, just one person. And if you can afford to feed more than one, please do so. Start to realize there is somebody that you know on a soul level who needs to be fed.”
~ Sai Maa
